The Science Behind the Calculations
The relationship between steps and distance is determined by stride length, which is the distance covered with each step. Stride length varies significantly between individuals based on height, leg length, and gait patterns.
Stride Length Estimation
This calculator estimates stride length as a percentage of height, a method supported by biomechanical research on human gait. The formulas used are:

- Running stride length: Height × 0.52 (approximately 52% of height)
These multipliers represent averages derived from studies of human locomotion. Running produces a longer stride than walking because of the flight phase (when both feet are off the ground) and greater hip extension during push-off.
Distance Calculation
Once stride length is determined, distance is calculated using the formula:
Miles = (Steps × Stride Length in Feet) ÷ 5,280
The number 5,280 represents the feet in one mile. For metric conversions, the calculator uses 1.60934 kilometers per mile.

The calculator provides rough calorie estimates using commonly cited values: approximately 0.04 calories per step when walking and 0.06 calories per step when running.
